Wolf Lichen is easily identified by its yellowish-green color. In some cases, it’s almost a chartreuse color.
It got its name from being used by the natives in this country to control wolf and coyote populations. It is supposedly poisonous to K9s. The natives would place this lichen inside the carcasses of dead animals for the wolves and coyotes to eat and ingest the toxin.
Use Wolf lichen in your DIY projects, including a terrarium or part of a centerpiece displaying forest floor items or other arrangements in a bowl or a wood slice.
Like other lichens, it also makes good kindling for building a fire. It won’t take a spark from a ferro-rod and steel but will burn well with a direct flame. The more you grab and tightly wad up, the longer it’ll burn.
